Description: Plate 28 depicting a sting-ray.
Abstract: Fabio Colonna (1567-1650) was a scientist recognizing the fact that the studies of leaves alone are insufficient for accurate classification of plants that were to be used medicinally. His interest in botany stemmed from his suffering from epilepsy, which led him to the study of Greek and Roman physicians. The library’s edition is one of the earliest books to have engraved pictures of plants and flowers as opposed to wood carvings.
